Meet the woman who wears the Ruth Bader Ginsburg tattoo that’s going viral on Instagram and Twitter.
Her name is Rachel Fink, a 23 year-old student at the University of Maryland, College Park, inspired by the 81 year-old Supreme Court justice as a role model for women’s rights and gender issues.
Fink, who already has a number of tattoos, says she is planning a feminist-themed sleeve on her right arm and is giving Ginsburg the prime placement. Her bicep’s sudden internet fame is surprising, but, to Fink, welcome.
“It’s been a weird day,” Fink said in a telephone interview Saturday from her home in Washington D.C.
Tattoo artist Nikki Lugo inked the piece just forty-eight hours earlier at Paradise Tattoo in the city’s Adams Morgan neighborhood.
“I drew something up and brought it to Nikki and she made me a much better one,” Fink says. “I was excited to get it. I was just surprised at the reaction.”
As for her constellation of feminist icons, the next one she’s considering is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s lead character Olivia Benson, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. It’s a two-for-one deal, Fink reasons, since the character solves fictional sex crimes while the actress helps real-life sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse survivors through her charity, the Joyful Heart Foundation.
As for the tattoo artist, Nikki Lugo is getting ready to ink the likeness of another prominent female at the Supreme Court, Lady Justice, on the back of BuzzFeed reporter and frequent Meet The Press panelist, John Stanton.
