After an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Renee Good earlier this month, Donald Trump and his political operation pushed a counternarrative that painted the victim as the villain. For the most part, this didn’t work, and polls show broad public disapproval of ICE and its tactics.
In the days that followed, the survey data continued to tell the White House what it didn’t want to hear. The latest poll from The New York Times and Siena University found that 61% of voters overall said ICE has “gone too far.” A related CNN poll found that 51% of Americans believe immigration enforcement actions are making cities less safe, while the latest Politico poll found that a 49% plurality agree that the administration’s deportation campaign is too aggressive.
All of these polls were conducted before federal immigration officers shot and killed intensive care nurse Alex Pretti and then lied about it — the kind of violence that is likely to shift public attitudes even further away from the White House’s position.
Administration officials have spent the last year trying to justify radical changes to federal agencies by insisting that various departments had “lost the public’s confidence and trust.” Despite those claims’ dubious foundations, there’s reason to believe that Trump’s Department of Homeland Security really is losing the public’s confidence and trust.
Against this backdrop, many were eager to learn which agencies would be responsible for investigating Pretti’s slaying. Under normal circumstances, the Force Investigations Unit of Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension would take the lead in looking into use-of-force incidents involving law enforcement. On Saturday, however, as MS NOW reported, DHS officials denied state law enforcement access to the scene.
So who is taking the lead on investigating the DHS officers’ shooting? According to Secretary Kristi Noem, it’s DHS.
A day later, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that DHS is overseeing the probe into the incident.
So let’s review. DHS officers shot and killed an American citizen. DHS officers denied local law enforcement access to the scene. The head of DHS repeatedly lied to the public about what transpired and blamed the victim for the deadly violence. And now DHS is investigating the shooting carried out by DHS officers.
A great many Democrats, and a handful of Senate Republicans, have endorsed an independent investigation into the deadly shooting. Given the circumstances, that hardly seems like an outlandish suggestion.
