Capitol Police arrested an 18-year-old who ran toward the U.S. Capitol with a loaded shotgun Tuesday, authorities said.
The person exited a Mercedes SUV carrying a loaded shotgun and ran toward the building, Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.
As he approached the building, officers ordered him to drop the weapon and get on the ground. Sullivan said he “immediately complied” and was taken into custody.
No shots were fired.
The suspect, whom Sullivan identified as an 18-year-old who does not live in the area, wore a tactical vest and gloves, and he had additional rounds on him. Police also found a bulletproof helmet and a gas mask in his car.
Sullivan did not name the suspect. The vehicle was not registered under the suspect’s name, and he was linked to multiple addresses.
Police are unaware of a motive as of yet, the police chief said.
