Twelve people were killed Wednesday in Paris when masked gunmen stormed the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper. The French community immediately responded to the terror attack with expressions of support for the publication, reciting the slogan “Je suis Charlie,” which translates to “I am Charlie,” and holding vigils in the streets of Paris. Here is how members of the msnbc community reacted to the tragedy.

stanscript: Perhaps the cartoons for the next year ought to focus on the immaturity, stupidity and ignorance of terrorists, not leaders of any religion. That’s where it needs to be.
wmiles: Again, the criminally insane have inflicted pain and suffering upon the unwary, the trusting, and the naïve. The best response or rebuttal would be to publish the satiric media pieces for all the world to see. Otherwise, our first entitled and recognized freedom will be held hostage.

Donald Dade: Studying French again, just so that I can read Charlie Hebdo, a publication that I didn’t even know existed before today, and probably never would have otherwise. I’m making it a point to read it. That will be my response every time.
TheNewGuru: I must admit that although the French have a reputation for capitulation, their journalists are braver than ours. No such satirical publication would be allowed to exist in the U.S.
ruthtruth: There are no words that can possible justify this act of terror. My deepest sympathies to the people of France and especially Paris. I live near New York City and know all to well the feeling of helplessness and confusion trying to grasp what has just happened. It must take a very small person or people to kill over the use of freedom of speech. My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones .
