Chris’ list: Threatened American landmarks

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is out with its annual list of sites it says have had a unique contribution to America, but are being threatened.

Here are a few:

• Houston’s Astrodome was the world’s first domed, indoor, air-conditioned stadium. The Astros moved in in 2000, but now the Dome could be headed for demolition

• The Worldport terminal at JFK Airport symbolized America’s entry into the jet age when it was built in 1960. It, too, could be demolished

• The James River, where America’s first permanent English settlement was built, is now threatened by a proposed transmission line project

• The Gay Head Lighthouse was the first built on Martha’s Vineyard, but erosion could send it toppling over the cliff

• In Arizona, the MountianView Black Officers’ Club was the first military club built specifically for African-American officers. The Army has slated it for demolition.
