At least 14 Republican senators are threatening to stand in the way of federal gun legislation, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that’s not going to stop him from bringing the tighter gun laws up for a vote Thursday.
The Nevada Democrat said he would file the cloture on the bill Tuesday night. “It would be a real slap in the face to the American people not to do something on background checks, on school safety, on federal trafficking, which everybody thinks is a good idea,” he said in a press conference.
Reid singled out Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough. “On the gun legislation, I think the most direct approach to this was taken by a former Republican congressman, Joe Scarborough,” Reid said. “This morning on his Morning Joe, when he said, ‘The Republicans are going to filibuster a 92% issue. Here’s our latest poll: It was 87%. Basically, a 90/10 in something that involves the massacre of 20 first-grade children. Is anybody awake in my party on the bill?‘”
