With only 1,340 days until the 2016 election, which will be held on Tuesday November 8, 2016, speculation is bubbling about who will run for (and win) the presidency. The top Democratic contender is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A new Quinnipiac University poll has Hillary Clinton defeating Representative Paul Ryan, Senator Marco Rubio, and even highly-popular New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in potential match-ups.
Before looking ahead to a potential Hillary presidential run, The Cycle wanted to take a look back at her days as Secretary of State. Joining Monday’s show was Kim Ghattas, who traveled with Hillary Clinton as the BBC’s State Department Correspondent and is the author of the book “The Secretary: A Journey with Hillary Clinton from Beirut to the Heart of American Power.”
Hillary was very loyal to her former competitor and current boss, President Obama, said Ghattas. “Hillary very much wanted to be a team player because she felt that was the best thing for the United States,” Ghattas said. “President Barack Obama realized in Hillary Clinton he had someone who came in with a bold, dynamic stature who could get on the plane and represent the United States and hit the ground running wherever she landed, and that’s what he wanted by his side.”
As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton traveled over 950,000 miles to 112 countries. Hillary’s geopolitical legacy is unclear, Ghattas said, but “her relentless public diplomacy did manage to connect with people around the world, on some level, that we hadn’t seen before.”
