What to know
- In Texas, incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and MAGA challenger Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general, will head to a runoff for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination in late May.
- State Rep. James Talarico has defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett after a closely watched race for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Texas. The state’s new congressional map poses a challenge to Democrats, including 11-term Rep. Al Green. And GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales is trying to keep a scandal from stripping him of his seat.
- The Texas Supreme Court stayed a judge’s order to extend voting by two hours in Dallas and Williamson counties after a change in the way the county GOP ran its primaries confused hundreds of voters who were redirected from polling locations. The ruling came after Paxton appealed the voting extension.
- Former Gov. Roy Cooper won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, while former RNC Chairman Michael Whatley was named the Republican nominee. The two will face off in the November midterm elections to fill the seat of GOP Sen. Thom Tillis, who is retiring in January. Democrats are hoping a Cooper victory would help flip control of the Senate.
